Happy Aloha Friday y’all! (Blog Link)

By all accounts, June 16th is THE date that helps coalesce a myriad of random factoids. It not only helps congeal a loose series of seemingly unrelated people, places and events, but it provides a gold streaked vein of connection to help somehow bring more sense to the universe. June 16th is the proverbial Gorilla Glue that binds the fabric of time. Let me explain: Tupac Shakur, Tony Gwynn , The Monterey Pop Festival, The US Open and, of course, Father’s Day! Get it?

Well maybe not at first glance, so let me break it down for you:

  • June 16th is the date that the Monterey Pop Festival launched in 1967, also the introduction of Jimi Hendrix (a lefty) to a US audience.
  • June 16th, 1971, Tupac Shakur is born. Shakur, a prolific wordsmith (and lefty) in his short time on earth would go on to impact generations through his song writing, acting, and activism. Though he was born in New York, he was the face of west coast hip hop!
  • June 16th 2014, Tony Gwynn dies. Tony, Mr. Padre (a lefty) was born in LA and spent his entire 20 year career on the left coast with the San Diego Padres amassing a whopping eight batting titles and holding the #1 career batting average of .338 since 1941.
  • The US Open and Father’s Day (which should actually be spelled Fathers’ Day) have a long standing double date on the third weekend in June. This year, the US Open is taking place in Los Angeles for first time in over 75 years and winner, who has a high probability of being a father, will be crowned on Fathers’ Day!

But wait, there’s more. Did you know the historic site of the Monterey Pop festival happens to now be a golf course. That both Tony Gwynn and Tupac share a lasting legacy of their impact on the generations that have come after them. A certain famous lefty golfer on needs the US Open to complete his career grand slam and has the most runner up finishes at the US Open with six. And then there’s what is considered Tupac’s greatest hit, California Love. (oh and Phish does a nice little cover/tease as of California Love sandwiched in an epic Tweezer). Enjoy these Tupac | Greatest Hits on this Friday.

To all the father’s out there…have a wonderful weekend.
